*Exclusive* Interview with Communist Party Of Nepal (Maoist) chariman Comrade Prachanda

Question: Now that the interim Government has given itself the power to abolish the monarchy, if the King interferes in politics, don’t you think you should withdraw your demand for the immediate abolition of the monarchy?

Prachanda: No, we don’t feel that. Although the Parliament has already decided that two-thirds majority of Parliament can abolish the monarchy, in that sense we feel that our demand is justified.
Question: So you want Parliament to abolish the monarchy immediately?
Prachanda: Yes, we want that Parliament should take initiative and monarchy should be abolished immediately.
Question: But then what is the point of having a constituent Assembly in four or five months’ time. This should be decided by the Assembly. (more…)

Maoists manage to reach High Court in Orissa

Cuttack: Two suspected Maoists entered the conference room of the Orissa High Court Bar Association on Saturday afternoon 23rd June and managed to leave bundles of leaflets pertaining to their two-day economic blockade agitation on June 26 and 27.

About 40 lawyers and other people who were present in the hall situated within the High Court premises came to know about the act only after the latter left the spot.

Lawyers present during the incident said that two persons entered the conference room at around 1.30 pm and left at least four bundles of leaflets on the table before leaving. The papers were found to be Maoist leaflets afterwards.

The Maoists had distributed leaflets and literatures in Cuttack and the Capital city in the past. But they had never entered a government premises so far.

In the leaflet that was found on the spot, the Communist Party of India (Maoist) said that the economic blockade was being organised by them in protest against the police excesses and the government policies with regard to the establishment special economic zones (SEZ), and resettlement and rehabilitation policy.

Criticising both the Central and State Governments for facilitating SEZs in different parts of the country and giving land and mineral reserves to private companies, the organisation urged the people to support their two-day agitation.

Condemning the police massacres at places such as Nandigram, Singur and Kalinga Nagar, the organisation also condemned the Salwa Judum programme of Chhattisgarh government alleging that police were killing innocent people in the name of fighting ‘extremism’.

(more…)

Maoist Homophobia?

Gary Leupp

The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), leading what many have considered the most advanced Maoist movement in the world for the last decade, has recently been accused of attacks on gay people and of indulging in anti-gay rhetoric. Unfortunately, the reports seem valid. In January, a senior party leader, Dev Gurung, now Minister of Local Development in Nepal’s transitional government, was quoted in the press as stating: “Under Soviet rule and when China was still very much a communist state, there were no homosexuals in the Soviet Union or China. Now [that] they are moving towards capitalism, homosexuals may have arisen there as well. So homosexuality is a product of capitalism. Under socialism this kind of problem does not exist.”
