Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) demands end of Monarchy & Republican state ! Massive street protests likely if demands from interim government are not met !

Kathmandu, Nepal - The Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M) on Sunday said the interim parliament must proclaim Nepal a republican state before announcing a new date for Constituent Assembly (CA) poll.
A five-day long Central Committee meeting of the party made the decision in this regard. The meeting, held at the party headquarters in Kathmandu, concluded Sunday.

At the meeting, members decided to table the proposal at the next meeting of top leaders of the eight political parties. Following the meeting, Maoist Chairman Prachanda told media persons that the eight parties have already agreed that a two-thirds majority of the parliament can formally declare the nation a republic.

“I am sure the parliament can make two-third majority to do away with the monarchy,” he said. He also said his party hasn’t yet taken any decision on whether or not to withdraw from the Eight Party Alliance (EPA) over the issue of CA poll deferral. “The party will hand over the authority to the party top leadership in case a situation arises to take such a decision,” he said.

Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, the Maoist party’s second in rank, said, “The CA poll must either be conducted on June 20 or the interim parliament must proclaim republic before announcing a new date for the poll.”
